Calvin Cains III: Suing Jefferson Parish Sherriff for Excessive Force
Bobby DiCello represents the family of Calvin Cains III in a lawsuit against Jefferson Parish Sherriff Joseph P. Lopinto, III, and several of his deputies for the use of excessive and unreasonable force in the arrest of this unarmed Black man, which directly resulted in his death.
On June 6, 2023, Cains was shot in the head by police — only moments after sitting down in the driver’s seat of his car and without posing any threat to the police.
While the Sheriff claimed that the use of deadly force by his deputies was proper, witnesses at the scene dispute the officers’ account of what happened. Repeated requests to review bodycam footage from that day have been rebuffed.
Bobby demands that the police department immediately release the bodycam video of the incident. He says: “The Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution protects United States citizens from unreasonable searches and excessive force during the arrest of an unarmed citizen. The Jefferson Parish Police Department has a tragic track record of using excessive force against Black and Brown men. It’s a systemic issue that must stop now.”
